Message :They aren't very reliable or very effective, cost 3x more, and save a nickels worth of energy each month.

They seem to work awesomely in most mini-splits. I don't know why they wouldn't work in a central unit.

I have a 1700 square foot house, but because of the layout, it has two central units. I have 5 tons of AC as a result, which sucks for humidity control. A variable speed compressor would save me a lot of money, because I wouldn't have to crank the thermostat down to get the humidity to an acceptable level.

If you're referring to heat pumps, they work off a 4 way valve that switches the directions of the Freon not the direction of the compressor motor.

I'm aware of how they work, but thanks.

Variable speed motors are along the higher end of units, but the fast majority blower motors just have multiple windings (usually 5 windings)

The motor and compressor in my unit are driven by an inverter, which can vary the output from 4000 BTU to 17200

As far as structures go, just about every region is different, but I don't think I've ever been in a house in my area without previous duct work (even if they don't have AC, they almost always have central heat)

I don't have duct work in my garage, hence my choise of either a window unit or a mini-split :)

:And keep in mind I prefer central air for a house (unless money is no object, then I'm in love with radiant floor heat) Also, i plan on putting a mini split in my garage, I just need to wire and insulate first :)
